Evan Gale Whittaker obituary - Obituary provided by Utah Tributes

Evan Gale Whittaker

Washington

1931  -  2008

Our loving husband, father, and brother, Evan Gale Whittaker, 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Washington, Utah on Sunday, May 4, 2008 of natural causes.

He was born on February 7, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Louring and Fern D. Sevy Whittaker. He married his sweetheart, Mary Sharon Dalton, on April 22, 1961, in the St. George LDS Temple. Together, they had five beautiful children; four boys and one girl—the apple of his eye.

Gale served an LDS mission in the Central Atlantic States Mission, and served his country in the Armed Forces. After his service, Gale was just happy to be at home in Circleville. Dairy farming was his life, and a tough way to make a living, even during the best of times. He worked hard to keep the dairy at the top of its potential. He was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in the production of “Excellent Quality Milk” each month for five straight years. With a rock, baling twine, grit, rusted spare parts and pioneering ingenuity, Gale could keep farm machinery moving up and down the fields. For 38 years he served on the Piute County Soil Conservation Committee.

In 1993 Gale and Sharon began serving at the St. George Temple for 12½ years. It was the highlight of their life. They moved to the St. George area in 1999 to begin the next phase of their lives. Gale did not want to be retired because he had always led such a busy and productive life. He became actively involved cutting school bags for the Humanitarian Aid Services in St. George and Salt Lake City. He did this for the last eight years of his life, during that time he cut by hand 120,000 bags.

Out of all the accomplishments in his life, Gale was the most proud of his family. He was one of a dying breed and the salt of the earth “good ole boys.” He was the happiest with his family and dairy cows. He considered a vacation to be the deer hunt, branding cows up the Stein Meadow and going on a picnic. He was full of wit and wisdom, and was a good friend.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; children: Jeff (Julie) Ray, Salt Lake City; Matthew (Jo) Circleville; Christopher (Debbie), St. George; Connie (Cleve) Weaver, Cedar City; and Nathan, Salt Lake City; brother Larry (Metta Jane), Circleville. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond, Louring, and Robert; and sisters, Joyce and Dorothy.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Circleville LDS Chapel at 1:00 p.m.. Friends may call at the chapel from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Interment will be in the Circlville Cemetery with military rites by the VFW Piute Post #7561.
