1935 - 2008

Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather, Ronald L. Bates, 72 passed away May 5th, 2008 peacefully at his home in North Ogden, UT, surrounded by his loved ones, after a brief, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Ron was born December 3rd, 1935 to Filmore Shannon and Edith Elizabeth Bates in Harrisburg, PA. He married Donna M. Rideout on October 15th, 1960 in New Brunswick Canada, solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964 after both joined the LDS church in 1963. To the end, he stated he had no doubt the church was true. He had many callings in the church but he most enjoyed being a home teacher and serving the many families he had stewardship over. Ron was a graduate of the Milton Hershey School in 1953 and only Hershey chocolate syrup was allowed in his house! He joined the USAF after graduation and served for 20 years throughout the United States, Hawaii, and Southeast Asia. Then went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree from Ricker College in Maine. Running small businesses after the service took him back to New Brunswick then to Calgary, Alberta, and most recently settling in North Ogden 11 years ago.

He loved his family and the joy they brought to him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Ed and Arlie Bates; and his oldest son, Jeff Bates. He is survived by his eternal companion of 48 years; daughter Jennifer (Randy) West of Wadsworth, OH; Jason (Rebecca) Bates of Jackson, TN; Justin (Jenny) Bates of Lafayette, LA; and 10 grandchildren - Kaitlyn and Jeremy Bates; Jonathan, Lucas, Rebecca West, Grace and Ian Bates, and Caroline, Hilton, and Lorelai Bates. We love you Dad!

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the North Ogden 20th Ward, 575 E. 3100 N. Friends may call at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden on Friday, May 9th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery.
